IXT Extends IoT Zero Trust with Real-Time Traffic Visibility, Powered by Illumio

The new capability maps every connection a cellular-connected device makes, flags anomalies as they happen, and contains threats through segmentation.

OSLO, Norway. IXT, a full MVNO built for secure IoT connectivity, today announced real-time traffic visibility for IXT Zero Trust, in collaboration with cybersecurity partnersShift Security and Illumio. The capability maps every connection a cellular-connected device makes, raises an alert the moment a device behaves outside its pattern, and contains threats through policy-based segmentation.

IXT Zero Trust already routes device traffic through the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange, removing exposed ports and replacing VPN access with device-initiated connections. The Illumio layer completes the offering. Operators see what every device communicates with, in real time, and set rules for what each device is allowed to reach.

IXT operates its own core network across 600+ mobile networks in 190+ countries. Traffic visibility sits inside this core and covers every device in the fleet, with no extra hardware at the customer site. The solution supports visibility through the network and local enforcement.

The problem: you connect a device, then lose sight of it

Private APNs and VPNs were built to isolate traffic, not to show you what moves inside the tunnel. Once a device connects, most operators have no view of what it talks to. A compromised sensor looks the same as a healthy one. Attackers count on this. They reach a low-value device, then move sideways across the network toward something worth taking. The first device is rarely the target. It is the way in.

The solution: see every connection, contain every threat

IXT Zero Trust Visualisation, powered by Illumio, adds four things on top of the connectivity layer.

Visual traffic mapping. Every communication through the IXT mobile gateway is visualised in real time, showing how devices interact with applications, services, and external destinations.

Communication visibility. Operators gain a complete view of device communications, making it possible to understand normal traffic patterns and identify connections that should not occur.

Policy-based segmentation. Security policies define which applications, services, and destinations each device or device group is allowed to communicate with. The policies apply consistently across device types, with agentless visibility through the network and local enforcement.

Automated policy enforcement and containment. Communications that fall outside approved policies are automatically blocked. If a device is compromised, segmentation prevents lateral movement and limits the impact to the affected device or segment.

Many of these deployments fall under the EU NIS2 Directive as essential or important entities. Network visibility, segmentation, and access control are widely recognised as important measures for reducing cyber risk and supporting compliance with NIS2 requirements related to network security, incident response, and risk management. IXT Zero Trust is designed to help organisations strengthen security while supporting regulatory requirements such as NIS2 and GDPR.

What the partners say

Most IoT operators know when a device is online. They have no view of what it talks to. This is where incidents begin. With the Illumio layer, every connection a device makes is mapped and checked against expected behaviour. When something steps outside the baseline, we see it, and we act on it. We added this because securing access solved half the problem. Seeing what devices do solves the other half." - Henning Solberg, CTO and Co-founder, IXT

Most organisations know which devices they have connected. Far fewer know exactly how those devices communicate or what should happen if one is compromised. Visibility is the foundation of Zero Trust, but visibility alone is not enough. By combining real-time traffic visibility with segmentation policies, organisations can limit every device to only the communications it needs and automatically contain threats before they spread." - Marius Holmsen, CTO, Shift Security

Built for regulated and security-sensitive industries

Visibility matters most where a connected device sits close to something valuable or dangerous.

Security and surveillance. The camera or access controller is often the weakest device on the network and the one with a clear route to everything else. Traffic mapping shows every connection it makes. An alert fires the moment it reaches somewhere it should not.

EV charging. Payment systems and grid communication share the same infrastructure. Segmentation keeps payment traffic apart from grid operations, so a problem in one does not reach the other.

Tracking and logistics. Location and cargo data crosses borders over public networks. Private infrastructure keeps the data off the public internet, and segmentation controls who sees what.

Containing a breach starts with seeing how everything connects. Bringing our segmentation and visibility to cellular IoT gives operators a way to map device traffic and stop lateral movement in environments they struggled to reach before. We look forward to working with IXT and Shift Security to bring this to OT and IoT."  Trevor Dearing, Senior Director of Critical Infrastructure at Illumio
