Data Pools for businesses: All you need to know

If your business manages data across multiple devices and locations it can be a complex and costly challenge. Enter data pools: a smart solution that's simplifying how businesses handle their mobile data needs.

What is a data pool?

Imagine a shared bucket or pool of data for all your SIM cards that all your devices can tap into. Instead of each device having its own individual data plan with a fixed limit, they all draw from this single, shared pool. This means that a device that one month uses more data than normal just draws from the shared pool. There are no limits for single SIMs, just a shared allowance for the total number of SIMs you have deployed. This is particularly useful for businesses with for example a fleet of vehicles or a network of IoT sensors.

Instead of each SIM having its own individual data limit, they all draw from this single pool. This eliminates the worry of individual devices exceeding their limits and incurring overage charges. It provides a safety net, allowing devices to utilise data from the shared pool when needed, ensuring continuous connectivity and uninterrupted operations, especially crucial for time-sensitive applications or mission-critical devices.

Data pooling for diverse business needs

Data pooling is perfect for businesses with multiple IoT devices that can vary in their data needs. Whether it's a logistics company tracking its fleet in real-time, or a network of smart sensors collecting data, a data pool simplifies data management and ensures consistent connectivity across the board. It's a scalable solution that can adapt to the needs of businesses of all sizes, from small businesses with a handful of devices to large corporations with hundreds or even thousands of connected devices.

Any situation where connectivity is paramount, data pooling offers a significant advantage. It allows for seamless data sharing across a wide range of devices and applications. This is particularly beneficial for managing the diverse connectivity needs of modern businesses.

No more overage fees

Avoid costly overage charges by having a buffer of shared data. Traditional data plans often come with the risk of overage charges if you exceed your allocated limit. With data pooling, you have a built-in buffer. If one device goes over its usual usage, it can draw from the shared pool, preventing unexpected overage fees. This provides peace of mind and budget predictability, allowing you to focus on your core business operations without worrying about surprise bills.

Benefits of data pool

Data pooling isn't just about sharing data; it's about unlocking a whole range of benefits that can transform how your business operates. From cost savings and simplified management to unparalleled flexibility and global reach, let's explore the key advantages that data pooling brings to the table.

Cost efficiency: maximise savings and optimise your data budget

Reduce data costs by sharing data across multiple SIM cards. By consolidating your data needs into a single pool, you can leverage the size of your deployment and possibly reduce your overall data expenditure. This is particularly beneficial for businesses with a large number of connected devices, where individual data plans can quickly become costly. Data pooling allows you to optimise your spending and allocate your resources more effectively.

Simplified management: streamline operations with centralised control

Manage all your data needs in one place with a centralised pool. Instead of juggling multiple individual data plans, data pooling provides a centralised platform to manage all your data needs. This simplifies administration and scaling, reduces the risk of errors, and provides a clear overview of your data usage patterns. It streamlines operations and allows you to focus on more strategic tasks.

Enhanced control: gain deeper insights and optimise your data strategy

Gain greater visibility and control over your data usage patterns. With data pooling, you gain valuable insights into your data consumption across all your devices. This allows you to identify trends, optimise usage, and make informed decisions about your data strategy. You can set usage alerts, monitor data consumption in real-time, and generate detailed reports to track your data expenditure and identify areas for improvement.

Global coverage: seamless connectivity without borders

Use your data pool anywhere in the world, ensuring seamless connectivity for your devices. This applies to providers like IXT with global coverage. For businesses with international operations, global data pooling is a game-changer. It ensures that your devices remain connected wherever they are in the world, without the need for expensive roaming charges or separate data plans for each country. Truly simplifying global connectivity.

As an example, a logistics company with a fleet of trucks operate across international borders and relies on real-time GPS tracking and data communication to manage its operations efficiently. Without data pooling, they risk incurring exorbitant roaming charges as their vehicles cross borders, leading to unpredictable costs and potentially impacting their profitability. Additionally, managing individual data plans for each truck in different countries would be a logistical nightmare.

In this scenario, global data pooling offers a streamlined and cost-effective solution, eliminating the complexities and expenses associated with managing multiple data plans across different countries. It ensures seamless connectivity, enhances productivity, and simplifies operations for businesses with a global presence.

How data pools work

Pooled allowance

At IXT you buy a data plan based on your expected amount of data each month. Within the plan there is a pool of data allocated for all your SIMs. They will then use from that allocated amount of data that month. If one or more SIMs use more than the average per SIM there is most likely other SIMs that have used none or very little data so in total you don't overspend data.

Shared access

All SIM cards within the pool can access and share the data. This means that any device connected to the pool can utilise the available data, ensuring that all your devices have the connectivity they need to function optimally. The pool acts as a shared resource, allowing devices to draw data as required, without being limited by individual data caps.

Usage monitoring

Track data usage across all SIM cards in real-time in our IXT CMP. You'll have access to tools and dashboards that provide real-time visibility into your data usage. This allows you to monitor data consumption across all your devices, identify trends, and proactively manage your data resources. You can track which devices are using the most data and identify potential areas of overuse to make sure you are within your limit.

If a device requires more data for a specific task or application, the pool automatically allocates more resources to that device, ensuring it can continue to operate effectively without impacting the performance of other devices.

Billing and reporting

Receive detailed reports on data usage and costs for the entire pool. Data pooling simplifies billing and reporting. Instead of receiving separate bills for each individual data plan, you'll receive a consolidated invoice for the entire pool. This makes it easier to track your data expenditure, analyse usage patterns, and optimise your data budget. You can also generate detailed reports to gain deeper insights into your data consumption and identify areas for improvement.

Data pool in action: how businesses benefit

Data pooling isn't just a theoretical concept; it's a practical solution that's transforming how businesses across various sectors operate. Let's explore some real-world applications of data pooling and see how it can address your specific needs.

IoT deployments

Connect and manage large numbers of IoT devices efficiently. IoT-businesses are deploying vast networks of connected devices, from smart sensors in factories to connected vehicles on the road. Data pooling provides an efficient and cost-effective way to manage the data needs of these deployments, ensuring that all devices have the connectivity they need to function seamlessly.

Cities are deploying a vast array of connected sensors to monitor traffic flow, optimise energy usage, manage waste disposal, and enhance public safety. These sensors generate a constant stream of data that needs to be transmitted and analysed. Data pooling enables efficient management of this data flow, ensuring that all sensors remain connected and contribute to the city's intelligent operations.

Organisations also use IoT sensors to monitor air quality, water levels, and deforestation in remote locations. These sensors often rely on cellular networks for data transmission, which can be expensive, especially in areas with limited coverage. Data pooling helps optimise data usage and reduce costs, making it feasible to deploy a larger network of sensors and gather more comprehensive environmental data.

International roaming

Ensure seamless and affordable data connectivity for IoT-devices either moving across borders or that are deployed in a different country or region. Data pooling eliminates the hassle and expense of international roaming charges. With a Global data pool these devices can roam and use data as normal, without any downtime or fear of running out of data. This simplifies international deployments and ensures that your devices remains connected and productive wherever they are in the world.

Fleet management

Track and manage data usage across a fleet of vehicles. For businesses that rely on a fleet of vehicles, data pooling provides a centralised solution for managing data across all vehicles, ensuring that drivers stay connected, navigation systems remain updated, and critical data, such as vehicle diagnostics and location information, is transmitted in real-time. This not only optimises data usage and reduces costs but also enhances operational efficiency and safety.

Imagine a logistics company with hundreds of trucks on the road. Data pooling allows them to monitor data usage across the entire fleet, identify any anomalies or excessive usage, and optimise data allocation to ensure that all vehicles have the connectivity they need for efficient delivery operations. This level of control and visibility is essential for businesses that rely on their fleet for daily operations.
